Union Cabinet Approves Doubling of Two Important Railway Lines Passing Through Telangana & Andhra Pradesh States

Shri Arun Kumar Jain, General Manager, South Central Railway informed that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has approved two major projects of doubling i.e., Mudkhed – Medchal & Mahbubnagar – Dhone section and Guntur – Bibinagar section in the jurisdiction of South Central Railway. These two projects will facilitate introduction of new trains and additional freight transportation to the benefit of both the Telugu States. The projects will aid in the socio-economic development of the regions in terms of triggering economic development in the area and will facilitate smooth mobility for the goods and people.

The Salient Features of the Projects are as detailed below:

1.     Mudkhed-Dhone Doubling project (417.88 Km)

The proposed project will increase the existing line capacity of the section causing smoothening of the train operations and improve punctuality as well as wagon turn round time.

-        It will facilitate reduction of congestion and increase of rail traffic.

-        The estimated cost of this project is Rs. 4686.09 crore.

The Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs approved the instant project of doubling of “Mudkhed-Dhone (417.88 Km)” on South Central Railway at an estimated cost of Rs.4686.09 crore proposed by Ministry of Railways.

In line with the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of a New India, the project is going to ease operations and congestion, providing the much required infrastructural development in one of the busiest sections of Indian Railways. The project will make people of this region ‘Atmanirbhar’ by creating multitasking workforce in the region which will enhance their employment/self employment opportunities. The project will also boost the’ Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana” through skill development of the people.

Mudkhed-Dhone section (417.88 km) will ease the traffic congestion between Balharshah-Kazipet-Secunderabad and Kazipet-Vijayawada as Goods traffic bound to North-South can be routed via new Double Line section. It will be an alternative coal and steel route for Balharshah-Ramagundam-Secunderabad-Wadi-Guntakal and will decongest the existing busy route and enhance the traffic between southern regions and northern regions of India.

Mudkhed – Dhone section connects the northern & western part of the country with southern region. Over the years, there has been gradual increase in the number of both Freight and Passenger traffic, due to teh steadily increasing demand. The line capacity utilization of Mudkhed-Dhone section is 167 % leading to detention of both Passenger and Goods in this critical section. Thus, doubling of this section will aid in easing the saturation of this critical section.

The main industrial clusters / corridors that are being served by this section includes:

2.     Guntur – Bibinagar Doubling project (239Km):

  • The proposed project will increase the existing line capacity of the section causing smoothening of the train operations and improve punctuality as well as wagon turn round time.
  •  It will facilitate reduction of congestion and increase of rail traffic.
  • The project will also generate direct employment for about 75 lakh man days during construction
  •  The estimated cost of this project is Rs. 2853.23crore.

The Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs approved the project of doubling of “Guntur - Bibinagar (239.00 Km)” on South Central Railway at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,853.23 crore proposed by Ministry of Railways. This project will generate direct employment for about 75 lakh mandays during construction.

Guntur-Bibinagar section (239 km) connects southern and eastern parts of India (Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Orissa etc) to central and western part of the India (Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra etc.). It is the shortest route from Secunderabad to Guntur / Vijayawada and doubling of the section improves the mobility between Secunderabad and Guntur / Vijayawada. Guntur-Bibinagar is an alternate route between Secunderabad and Vijayawada avoiding highly congested and stressed route via Kazipet, Warangal and Khammam.

The line capacity utilization of Guntur – Bibinagar section is 148.25%. Passenger and Goods trains are suffering due to detention in this section. Over the years, Freight and Passenger traffic from southern and eastern parts of India to central and western parts of the India has been increasing. Doubling of this section will lead to easing of the section and facilitate meeting the demand of ever increasing transportation needs of both our passenger and freight customers.
