CPR & Hands-on Workshop Empowers Railway Hospital Staff with Life-Saving Skills

As part of the Continuing Medical Education initiative, a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Hands-on Workshop was successfully conducted on 19th July 2025 at the Seminar Hall of the Divisional Railway Hospital, Vijayawada. The workshop, held under the guidance of Dr. Ch. Srinivasu, Chief Medical Superintendent, Vijayawada Division aimed to enhance the emergency response capabilities of the nursing and clinical staff, with a sharp focus on cardiac emergencies.

The one-day session covered essential topics including Basic Life Support, the use of Defibrillators and Automated External Defibrillators, and ECG interpretation in cardiac emergencies. Participants received structured instruction and actively engaged in hands-on practice using adult and child manikins.

“This kind of practical training is vital. In critical moments, it’s not just about knowing what to do, it’s about being able to do it fast and right,” said Dr. A. Sivaram, Anaesthesiologist and faculty member for the session. “We focused on real-world scenarios to ensure participants leave with confidence in their ability to respond.”

The workshop featured expert resource persons including Dr. Vijaya Kumar, Critical Care Specialist, who highlighted the need for frequent upskilling in emergency medicine. “Techniques and protocols evolve,” he said. “This workshop bridges that gap between knowledge and action. CPR is a skill that fades without practice, and today’s event gave the team that much-needed refresh.”

Dr. Sai Prakash, Cardiologist, led the ECG interpretation session, demystifying rhythm abnormalities and their clinical relevance. “Early identification of cardiac events through ECG can make the difference between life and death. Our goal was to make interpretation intuitive and precise,” he noted.

The hands-on segment was a highlight of the day, with each participant receiving individual time and feedback during practice sessions. This immersive component ensured that the staff were not only observers, but also active learners.

The event was seamlessly supported by Dr. Ravikanth, Additional Chief Medical Superintendent (Admin), who coordinated the logistics to ensure a smooth experience for all attendees.

Dr. M. Jaideep, Additional Chief Medical Superintendent, Health & Family Welfare, extended his appreciation to everyone involved. “Workshops like these reaffirm our commitment to patient safety and professional excellence,” he said. “I thank all faculty members, staff, and support teams who made this programme a resounding success.”

With updated skills and renewed confidence, the healthcare team at Vijayawada’s Divisional Railway Hospital is better prepared to act swiftly and effectively during cardiac emergencies, ensuring that every second truly counts.
