Leads the charge in the conservation of electrical energy

Vijayawada Division, South Central Railway, acknowledging the importance of environmental sustainability over Indian Railways, annually observes Energy Conservation Week, emphasizing its commitment to reducing energy consumption and promoting eco-friendly practices. This year too, it is observing the National Energy Conservation Week from 14th to 21st December 2023 over the Division.

Shri Narendra A Patil, Divisional Railway Manager, Vijayawada Division, South Central Railway, said that the National Energy Conservation Week serves as a platform to showcase the railways’ innovative initiatives, technological advancements, and the collective effort toward a greener and more sustainable future. With an extensive network covering vast geographical areas, the railways have recognised the need to address the environmental impact of their operations. The observance of Energy Conservation Week is a testament to our dedication to responsible and sustainable practices.

Shri T Suresh Babu, Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer (Maintenance), Vijayawada Division, opines that Energy Conservation Week serves as a platform to raise awareness among railway staff, passengers, and the general public about the significance of energy conservation through various communication channels, including posters, seminars, and social media campaigns. We aim to educate stakeholders about environmental challenges and the role each individual can play in mitigating them. The week-long observance allows us to showcase its Railway’s innovative practices in energy conservation; these include advancements in technology, energy-efficient infrastructure, and the implementation of sustainable solutions across various aspects of railway operations.

Vijayawada Division has been at the forefront of promoting and embracing green technologies, which is a top priority for Indian Railways. The Division has taken steps toward the adoption of renewable energy sources, energy-efficient locomotives, and modern technologies that contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of railway operations. We have integrated solar power into Railway stations, workshops, office buildings, running rooms, training centers, etc., which are equipped with solar panels to harness clean energy. This not only reduces dependency on conventional energy sources but also contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Energy Conservation Week will also involve engaging railway employees through workshops, training sessions, and interactive programs. The goal is to instill a sense of responsibility and consciousness regarding energy usage among the workforce, encouraging them to adopt energy-saving practices in their daily operations.
