Vijayawada Division celebrates 79th Independence Day





South Central Railway’s Vijayawada Division celebrated the 79th Independence Day with grandeur and patriotic spirit at the Railway Mini Stadium, Vijayawada, on 15th August 2025. Shri Mohit Sonakiya, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Vijayawada Division, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

To mark this momentous day, Shri Mohit Sonakiya hoisted the National Flag and extended heartfelt greetings to all officers, staff members, trade union representatives, and their families. The celebration featured a ceremonial parade, reflecting the spirit of unity and dedication. DRM, accompanied by Shri Shanmuga Vadivel S, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner (Sr. DSC), Vijayawada, inspected the parade contingents comprising the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and students from Jack & Jill School.

In his address, Shri Mohit Sonakiya lauded the outstanding achievements of Vijayawada Division. Ranked 10th nationally in freight loading, the division continues to demonstrate exceptional growth. During the recent Railway Week Celebrations, Vijayawada Division was honored with 12 Best Performance Shields, including the prestigious Overall Efficiency Shield.

Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 24 stations—including Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, and Nellore—are undergoing comprehensive upgrades. Safety remains paramount, with zero consequential accidents reported this year. Despite on-going infrastructure works, train punctuality stands at an impressive 87%.Highlighting the division’s financial and operational performance, DRM noted that freight loading in July 2025 reached 3.114 million tonnes, marking a 21.45% increase over the previous year. Gross revenue for FY 2024–25 stood at ₹5,841 crore, with freight revenue contributing ₹4,239.74 crore. Infrastructure enhancements include the development of new sidings, installation of CCTV cameras, and integration of private weighbridges.

The Mechanical and Electrical Departments have achieved record wagon overhauls, introduced new train services, and expanded solar capacity to 3,422 kWp—resulting in annual savings of ₹6.1 crore. Key infrastructure projects such as Road Under Bridges (RUBs) and third-line works at Peddavadlapudi with Electronic Interlocking have been successfully completed, ensuring minimal disruption to services. Signal and telecommunication upgrades—including automatic block signalling between Samarlakota and Medapadu, and electronic interlocking at Duggirala and Pedavadlpudi stations—have significantly enhanced sectional capacity. The traction distribution network now spans 1,001 RKM and 2,892 TKM of electrified sections, with a 2x25 KV system under implementation.

Notably, the division has earned ISO 9001:2015 certification from the UK-based Quality Research Organisation—an unprecedented achievement for Indian Railways. Sustainability remains a core focus, with solar initiatives saving over 66 lakh units annually and reducing carbon emissions by more than 250 tonnes.

Initiatives such as Operation Nanhe Farishte and Operation Amanath underscore the division’s commitment to passenger welfare, cleanliness, health, and security. With over 795 staff promotions, health camps, and consultative feedback mechanisms, Vijayawada Division continues to uphold its mission of excellence and nation-building.

As part of the celebrations, DRM presented medals and certificates to 41 meritorious children from Jack & Jill School, ICON Public High School, Bharat Scouts & Guides, and Kendriya Vidyalaya (Vijayawada) for their achievements and participation in various activities—including quiz competitions, poster-making, and cultural programs—organized under the Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign 2025.

DRM also appreciated the Personnel and Security (RPF) departments for successfully organizing the event and once again extended warm Independence Day wishes to all. Shri Srinivasa Rao Konda, Additional Divisional Railway Manager (Operations), along with all branch officers, other officials, staff members, their families, and school children, actively participated in the Independence Day celebrations, making the occasion truly memorable.
